Street Design In an Evolving Context
We are all watching as our worlds change around us
We have all seen so much change in the cities we were born in, in the places we grew up. Some of us stayed there and watched the changes, some of us were part of those changes, some of us will be part of coming changes.
In the City of Santa Fe,
many high-speed roads once designed and appropriate for a rural area now bisect neighborhoods. What was useful in a once rural context may be dangerous in the current residential context. How do we know where this has happened? Should we take action? In 2023 the SFMPO released a report considering these questions. But the story isn't over yet...

Protected bike lanes
are bike lanes with a physical/vertical separation between the bike lane and vehicle lane. They have been installed in hundreds of cities across the US, but not yet in Santa Fe. This type of bike lane has been shown to improve safety and comfort for all road users and especially people biking.
Will We implement these?
The Santa Fe MPO, with funding support from AARP, conducts temporary pop-up protected bike lanes around the city for the community to try out this type of infrastructure. Read more about these efforts!

The “built environment” affects us. We live our lives among the bricks and mortar, under the streetlights and on the pavements. What is happening for you there? Please share with us!
