The Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), working in conjunction with Santa Fe Trails, Northern New Mexico Regional Transit District (NCRTD) and the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) have released a final draft of the first Santa Fe Metropolitan Public Transit Master Plan. The Santa Fe MPO is tasked with providing transportation planning services for the Santa Fe Metropolitan area. The MPO is comprised of Santa Fe County, Pueblo of Tesuque, City of Santa Fe and the NMDOT.
The 2010 Santa Fe Metropolitan Transportation Plan identified the need for more advanced planning in the areas of pedestrian, bicycle and transit facilities and services. As a result, the MPO has invested in the development of the 2012 Metropolitan Bicycle Master Plan and the pending Metropolitan Public Transit and Pedestrian Master Plans.
Key themes addressed in the Public Transit Master Plan include: Seamless Connectivity, Coordinated Marketing, Technology Assessment, Coordinated Operations Planning, and Connectivity with bicycle and pedestrian modes, Environmental Justice & ADA Accessibility, Preparing for Future Growth, Economic Development, Route Modifications, Infrastructure Needs, Fare Policies, and Outreach.

After mapping, projects can be prioritized for funding and implementation. The highest priority projects will be accessible for review with member governments so they can be included into the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). . Based on concentrations of high priority projects, high priority pedestrian improvement zones can be designated to complete improvements by geographic area.
